I have grown tremendously as a human being since going natural. At first, I thought that it was only going to be about my hair but I soon discovered that other aspects of my life started flourishing as well. Returning natural definitely has its own benefits especially in building someone’s character. I’ll share with you how I learned 5 life lessons that have built me as a human being.
PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE
If you are a kinky curly girl, like I am, then you know in your heart that patience is important. I was always the one who wanted things to be done immediately. However, maintaining my natural hair taught me that you wouldn’t be able to work like that. Since I’ve become patient with my hair, my tolerance of people around me has also improved.
ACCOUNTABILITY BREEDS RESPONSIBILITY
I learned that if I didn’t go to bed with my hair out and not wrapped, I’d have to be prepared for consequences such as breakage. I also learned to stop blaming my hair struggles on ‘bad’ hair products; instead, I started using good hair products and techniques. Once I accepted responsibility for any mistakes made to my hair my hair responded well to the positive changes applied. Remember that one else will take care of your hair for you!
CONSISTENCY IS KEY
I was that girl who would wash her hair once in two months, and boy did my hair teach me a hard lesson! I was bewildered as to why my hair was breaking and scalp itchy. However, once I started my weekly washes without fail, I saw a great difference. To to be successful, one has to be consistent in their regimen. Naturalistas have to be creatures of habit to achieve their hair goals.
Natural hair care forces you to learn exactly how to take care of it. Personally, I have taught myself various techniques and hairstyles through various online platforms. It has, in turn, helped me become more self-reliant in my day-to-day life.
In the event that you don’t plan yourself properly, natural hair can be expensive! Creating a budget helps you to save money and to be wise about how you spend it. I have learned to save money for my products. I also allocate time for washdays so that I don’t end up working on my hair for a whole day.
Those are some of the lessons I have learned in my hair journey that have helped me with my everyday life. Who would have thought I would learn from my hair? I am in awe of how we can learn from different situations and then become better humans just by learning from the simplest and/or unexpected situations.
